“Doing nothing about road risk management and sticking one`s head in the sand is not an option. It is apparent that working regimes and illegal or dangerous practices can be a contributory factor in road accidents. Companies have to take far more seriously than they do at present their Duty of Care in respect of employees driving on work related journeys, not only in a company car but equally in the employee`s own car. Pressure and scrutiny of company risk management programmes is growing from all sides – Government, the HSE, the Police and Unions.
A company cannot begin to bring in safe working practices nor subsequently control them without information. Information is the key to ensure that rules on risk management are put into practice and acted upon. Information can highlight breaches of the rules and may be a defence in answering a prosecution brought for corporate culpability. The fleet that ignores the warning signs does so at its peril. Jail may await those who see no profit or benefit in road risk management.”
